PSS project - G.E.R Glass Reverse Vending Machine

For this PSS assignment I’ve decided to design PSS that will be able to recycle glasses,
as I’ve been researching, I realize that there is actually a large percentage of glass bottles that are not being recycled but thrown into landfill, this shows that there is an actual need to get these glass packaging recycled.

The current reverse vending machines have problems, which I've researched on shows that these machines are currently really inconvenient; some people don't even know it exists. They do not offer attractive rewards, which motivates people to recycle and that the machine is really slow in processing, people have to put bottles in one by one.
With this glass reverse vending machine, all you have to do is press the start button and pour all the glass bottles into the machine at once instead of doing it one by one. Threes a sensor, which scans the bottles, if it does not match the requirement the item will be rejected and will be exit at the lower part of the machine. The glass bottles are crushed into cullets and filtered into three categories, which represents the three types of glasses, the brown, green and clear glass. These glass cullets are put into bags, which will be taken away by the staff of recycling facilities. But instead of transporting it to the recycling facility, it is brought over straight to the glass bottle manufactures. The advantages of this machine is that people will be able to see how the bottles are being filters from the middle part of the machine which will be something interesting to watch which will attract children. They will be able to pour all the bottles in at ones that save a lot of time. The reward is not just cash but also lotteries.

It's going to be located in multiple locations like outside supermarket, liquor stores and fuel stations. This makes it really convenient for people, they would not have to bring it over just to recycle but bring it out with them when they are about to buy groceries or alcohol.

  1. I think this is a very good idea, I see a lot of plastic bottle disposal bin, but not many glass bottle disposal bin. It would be fun to see glass smashing in the machine and knowing that the glass won't hit us. However, I think it would be better if there is a poster showing where this bin will be located, so i can tell how it will look in the street. But by looking at the model, it looks pretty good to me

  2. I really like you idea. You turn a boring recycling machine into something that is playful and interesting. Seeing glass smash in the machine and being collected to different section will make people curious about the recycling process of a glass bottle. This system will help increase the glass recycle rate as it can attract lots of people's attention and people will want to place their bottle into the machine to have a try. It's a clear idea.

  3. I have seen the existing bottle recycling machine, but they are really confusing and hard to use, user will need the special card to use the service. your design is much easier to use comparing to the existing ones, users do not need to put the bottles in one by one, they can throw all in at one time, which is quite convenient. people will also have fun watching the glass bottoles get crashed. i think adding more kind of bottles and cans will be better.

  4. This is really good one Ben . I like your concept and the research too. The posters are clear and give me enough details. The presentation n layout are all so good. It sounds like i like it all. :))
Just a little note, I think on the machine you should have a label/ graphic telling how user can interact with this machine, because I think your machine right now is abit plain. But overall, it is really good.

  5. This is a very useful PSS, I research on glass for an assignment once and I know that glass isnt recycled properly, because of the colour matching and what not. This is a very clever way to help consumer set out the different glass bottles without putting effort! However the way you've designed it, it kind of looks like people are allowed to sit on it, like a bench of some sort?

  6. Your model was very shiny. I liked it but I agree with Sarita with her comment about product language. The shape resembles a couch with an armrest however I think its very interesting how you've included a viewing panel so the user can see the process which would encourage them to use it.

  7. this is a very good idea for glass disposal bin. and it is a very smart way to classified different glasses without putting effort. but i think your model is a bit dull. it would be more attractive if its in brighter colour
